“To mortify deals with the characteristics of the former physical life of a sinful man before God’s Grace comes in. The acts, habits, ambitions, and affections of a sinner are the exact opposite of those same faculties within the child of God. To mortify deals with the physical actions of a Christian that struggles with the Adamic life – which can be completely put off. The physical acts of anger, filthy communication, aggravation, pride, and fornication are put off and not allowed when God destroys the Adamic life. Love for God and love for fellow man are the physical fruit of a child of God’s character- after mortification. This lifetime fruit is put on. In mortification the physical character of a child of God is completely renewed by the operation of God’s Holy Spirit”.In both passages below mortification deals with the part of man that has not been completely delivered. To mortify is when the Old life is gone…completely. To mortify is when the Holy Spirit has all of you…body, soul, and spirit. You become dust at the Savior’s feet. Christ has complete control of you. Christ has the whole man. This is the doctrine of sanctification that does not come by human works…but by the operation of God’s power that puts man under the control of the Holy Spirit, completely. The former life is buried and not shown anymore. Spirituality is thus not effected by the former man. The old you is gone. The new you has put on the bond of perfectness and lives that way until eternity.
Colossians 3:1-16…Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: For which things’ sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience: In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them. But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him: Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all. Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.
Romans 8:13-14…For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
The be mortified is when Revival comes.
